Motor starting on generators

How to record motor-starting current, sequence and generator response assumptions for Australian backup supply worksheets.

Motor-start purpose

Motor starting on a generator is often the event that drives the backup supply conversation. The worksheet should show the motor current, starting multiplier, running load already connected and generator comparison value.

It should not replace supplier capability data.

Workflow

  1. Record motor full-load current source.
  2. Record starting method and multiplier source.
  3. Identify which other loads are already running.
  4. Calculate the starting-event kVA.
  5. Hand the record to generator supplier or project review when response, voltage dip or sequence matters.

Boundaries

  • Do not use generic multipliers as manufacturer data.
  • Do not ignore load sequence.
  • Do not infer voltage-dip performance from kVA alone.
  • Do not select a generator without supplier review.
