RCD test log calculator
Summarise multiple Australian RCD and RCBO test rows from entered device labels, row types, outcomes and criteria.
row_status = rcd_log_row_logic(row); review_row_count = count(row_status != within_entered_criterion); within_count = count(row_status == within_entered_criterion); average_trip_time_ms = average(finite measured trip times)- Each row keeps its own device reference, row type, criterion and observed outcome.
- The summary counts review rows but does not erase row-level status.
- Timing values are user-entered or selected by the user.
- The log summary does not replace the original instrument record.
| Variable | Meaning | Unit | Use |

RCD test log calculator technical guide
Use this calculator when an Australian RCD or RCBO record contains several entered rows and the next task is to summarise the log. It counts rows that need review, shows the row references, and reports basic trip-time statistics from finite measured values.
The calculator is deliberately narrow. It does not choose test intervals, publish hidden timing criteria, replace the original instrument record or decide the project action. It keeps each row's device label, row type, criterion and outcome visible so the summary does not hide a row-level concern.
Field Use Cases
| Work setting | Useful input | Output to record |
|---|---|---|
| Switchboard handover | Several RCD or RCBO rows from a handover sheet. | Row count, review-row count and trip-time summary. |
| Maintenance register | Current log rows for a board or asset group. | Review row references for follow-up. |
| Supervisor review | Apprentice or contractor test sheet. | Counts by row status and row references. |
| Facilities record | Mixed timed rows and function rows. | Separate review count without mixing row types. |
A useful log summary names the device row that needs attention. A weak summary only says the register is complete and leaves the next reviewer searching for the row that caused the concern.
Input Basis
| Input | Calculator treatment | Outside the calculator |
|---|---|---|
| Log reference | Printed in the summary and export. | Job file, switchboard schedule or asset register. |
| Row reference | Kept beside the row result and review list. | Original test sheet row number or instrument record. |
| Device reference | Kept with the row result. | Device label, board schedule and location. |
| Row type | Selects the row-level RCD log logic. | Test method and workplace procedure. |
| Criterion basis | Selected or entered by the user. | Current requirements, manufacturer data and project basis. |
| Observed outcome | Determines row status. | Retest, inspection or device review action. |
Every row remains user-entered. The calculator does not decide whether the row was required, whether the method was correct, or whether the project file is complete.
Multi-row log boundary
The log calculator is a summary layer over row-level RCD test logic. It does not change a row result to make the log look cleaner. If one row records an unexpected trip, a timed no-trip row, an above-time row or a function row needing review, that row remains visible in the review list.
Use the single-row checker when one row needs close inspection. Use this page when the task is to count and summarise several rows from the same board, asset group, handover pack or maintenance register.
| Task | Use this page? | Better route when not this page |
|---|---|---|
| Count review rows in an entered RCD or RCBO log. | Yes. | Not applicable. |
| Inspect one RCD test row in detail. | No. | RCD test checker. |
| Compare insulation resistance against an entered criterion. | No. | Insulation resistance record. |
| Check field names for a test sheet. | No. | Testing record fields table. |
| Clarify RCD, RCBO or device wording. | No. | Protection device terms table. |
Result Interpretation
| Summary value | Practical reading | Record action |
|---|---|---|
| Review row count is zero | No entered row is flagged by the row-level logic. | Keep row basis and instrument records with the log. |
| Review row count is above zero | At least one row needs review. | Use the row references to return to the source record. |
| Unexpected-trip count is above zero | A non-operating-current row recorded a trip. | Review test setup, circuit state and device condition outside the calculator. |
| No-trip timed row count is above zero | A timed row recorded no trip. | Keep the original row visible for follow-up. |
| Function row review count is above zero | A push-button function row did not operate. | Keep it separate from timed current-injection evidence. |
Trip-time statistics are secondary. They help compare rows, but they do not replace the row status or the source record. A fast average cannot cancel a review row.
Worked Australian Examples
| Situation | Entered rows | Output reading | Practical note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Handover log | Rated-current row, non-operating row and five-times row. | 3 rows, 0 review rows, average 23 ms from finite trip times. | Keep device references and instrument records attached. |
| Review log | One unexpected trip and one timed no-trip row. | 3 rows, 2 review rows. | Use row references to find the original results. |
| Function row review | One timed row and one push-button row that did not operate. | Function row is counted for review. | Do not treat the function row as timed evidence. |
The examples use Australian RCD and RCBO wording, metric current and time units, and user-entered criteria. They are worksheet records, not instructions to alter the test method.
Australian RCD Record Boundary
Australian RCD and RCBO logs can sit inside installation verification, workplace maintenance, equipment management and manufacturer-documentation workflows. Current standards, site procedures, device instructions and competent-person review can override the worksheet basis.
Use the output as a log summary. Do not use it as an original test record, device selection decision, rectification close-out record or final project decision.
Stop Points
- A row reference cannot be matched to the original test sheet.
- A device reference does not match the board schedule or asset register.
- The row type is uncertain.
- The criterion basis is not documented.
- A row needs review and the source instrument record is missing.
- The summary is being used to hide a row-level concern.
- The output is being used as an original test record or final project decision.
Handover log
A switchboard handover pack includes three RCD rows with the row basis recorded beside each device.

- Evaluate rowsEvaluate 3 entered rows with the RCD log row logic.
- Count review rows0 rows need review in this log.
- Keep row evidenceThe log summary keeps row references so device labels and instrument records stay traceable.
Average recorded trip time is 23 ms.
The log summary has no review rows, but each row still needs its instrument record, device label and criterion source.
- The device references match the switchboard schedule.
- The entered criteria belong to the rows being summarised.
- The original instrument records remain with the job pack.
Review log
A supervisor review finds an unexpected trip on the non-operating row and a timed row with no trip recorded.

- Count review rows2 rows need review in this log.
- Keep row evidenceThe log summary keeps row references so device labels and instrument records stay traceable.
Average recorded trip time is 21 ms.
Two row references stay visible so the log does not hide the original row-level review items.
- Review rows are not removed from the summary.
- The log keeps row references so the source record can be found.
- Device and procedure review happens outside the calculator.
Function row review
A facilities log records a push-button function row that did not operate.

- Count review rows1 rows need review in this log.
- Keep row evidenceThe log summary keeps row references so device labels and instrument records stay traceable.
Average recorded trip time is 28 ms.
The function row is counted as a review row without pretending that a timed current-injection value exists.
- The push-button row is a function row only.
- The entered log does not replace timed testing evidence.
- The device label remains traceable to the asset register.
